Women to Honor

God has a way of putting people in your life when you need them. It has been so evident to us through our journey to create Sanne and now our endeavor to watch her grow and take care of her, that we cannot do this on our own. The meals, visits, cards, gifts, calls and words have carried us through these first two weeks of Sanne's life.

Becoming a parent takes a lot of confidence. Nathan and I don't know what we are doing most of the time and we try to listen to what Sanne needs but sometimes it's unclear. At 2 a.m. when Sanne is screaming and we are exhausted we rely on our faith, confidence, marriage and a reminder that our community is supporting us to get through.

There are four women who I know, without a doubt, God put in our lives during our infertility and pregnancy to guide us and support us. We have relied on their kind words, their medical knowledge and their confidence that we would become parents. The transition from infertility procedures to labor to Sanne could not have happened without these women. Nathan and I are so grateful to each of them and wanted to acknowledge this in our blog.

Dr. Davies was our Reproductive Endocrinologist. She not only is incredibly talented from a medical standpoint, but had a way of calming our fears everytime we consulted with her during our infertility. I remember asking her one time why I have polycystic ovaries, and her response was "it's just who you are." She even told me that my uterus was stunning. Who knew?! Dr. Davies had a way of encouraging us to trust her and it paid off. She put little Sanne as an embryo into my body at just the right time.

Sandy was the In Vitro director at North Shore Fertility where Nathan and I had our treatment. Sandy was an incredible support to us with our million and one questions, breaking the news when our treatments did not work, celebrating with us when we did become pregnant and supporting us through our pregnancy by giving us books and affirmation. Sandy came over on Friday with her daughter Georgia and it was so powerful to see Sanne in the hands of a woman who pulled for us before Sanne was conceived.

Dr. Thorpe is an incredible doctor. She was the perfect fit for us during our pregnancy. She was always supportive of what we wanted, a great listener to our concerns. She was not on call the night we went into labor but came anyway. She stood there and encouraged me as I pushed for over three hours. We are so grateful for her calming nature and her dedication.

Bridget, our doula, was a great guide to have during the last trimester of pregnancy. She held my hand during every contraction (with Nathan holding the other). Counted each and every push for me and kept Nathan and my confidence and endurance up during the entire labor and post labor experience. I can't imagine our experience without Bridget.

Sanne has been welcomed into the world through the support and guidance of four strong women. What a gift.

Three hours? I told you she would be stubborn! Can't wait to hear the WHOLE story.
She's getting more beautiful every day.

I remember feeling just that same way about my midwives. I love the connnecting that happens between women during the whole birth process. It's an ancient bond, isn't it? If Owain had been a girl, I would have been tempted to name him Paula Krista Karen after the women who helped me bring him into the world.

Thanks for the photos. It's fun to be able to picture your support team!
