On July 09th Sanne turned four months old. Today we took her for her check-up. What does a healthy baby need?

Sanne is now 12 lbs. 12. oz. That's 2 lbs and 10 oz. gained in just the last month (50th percentile). She is 2 feet 2 1/2 inches (75th percentile) and her head is 50th too. Looks like we've got ourselves a healthy and average baby!
Our doctor said we should start her with a daily feeding of rice cereal starting in 2 weeks to help her neurologically. I've heard 6 months from others. Wondering if anyone has an opinion that we can take into consideration? Feel free to comment on what has worked best for you.

Hej! Jenny said a couple of days ago that she hadn't heard anything, but I've just talked to her, and she did recieve a mail from you the other day... I hope you'll have a wonderful day!

Is she turning over yet? She looks like she's about to in the little video. What a beauty! Steve and I like the picture of her in stripes. I can't believe she's four months old!
yay for being healthy! that's cuz she has two amazing parents! :)
not that i have a baby, but the baby that lives at my house definately started eating some solids at 4 mos. and my friend swears by avocado as the best brain food around. and her 3 year old is the smartest one i know (so far...). :)
Hello! Jacob started eating solids at 4months, but Aidan didn't until 6 months. With both I could tell they were either ready or not. One big indicator that our dr shared was this: do they watch you when you eat, watching you take food from your plate and put it in your mouth. That was a big indicator for both boys. Jacob was definitely interested in what we were eating and gobbled food the minute we fave it to him. Aidan on the other hand coudln't have cared less. It wasn't until around 6 months that he seemed a little interested and even when we started to give him solids, it took a while before he to really seem to enjy it. Just trust your gut feeling and go with what you are comfortable with. You'll know what's right.
I have no baby wisdom, but I can say you have an adorable little daughter. I'm glad to see that she enjoys a variety of activities. : )
I (Megan) will at least be in Chicago the weekend of July 20th at Johanna's. If you folks are in town we'll have to venture up north so I can see you guys and the little Sanne.

Wow! Time flies. As far as the rice cereal goes, I've always heard between 4 and 6 months. The new trend seems to be breastfeeding only until 6 months. Both my girls started with solids in their 5th month. Two things to keep in mind: 1) Sanne will probably have a gag reflex and that is normal!! Don't freak. 2) Adding a "meal" doesn't take the place of a nursing session so it will require more work from you.
That is advise that was passed to me from someone and I was glad to know it ahead of time.
Good luck!!!
I think we've talked 'bout this... but I started giving Paige rice cereal when just milk wasn't cutting it for her (hunger-wise) anymore.
AJ's right -- it's going to be more work for a while, don't give up. :)
We started giving Henry rice cereal when he was just about 5 months old. We did rice for about 6 weeks, then oatmeal for a few weeks and then we started veggies.
Spoon feeding was one of my least favorite things. Sorry to say that. It just makes life a lot harder.
From what I have read, the American Academy of Pediatrics is split on this issue. Some advocate for breastmilk alone up to 6 months, others say it's ok to start cereal at 4 months. I agree with the other comments, it's really up to you and what Sanne is ready for. I waited til 6 months. Trey probably would have done well if I started a little bit earlier. I have also heard several moms say that the earlier they started, and the more variation they gave their kids early on, the less picky the kid was when it came to food.
Wow, are you brave, asking for comments on something as unpredictable as spoon feeding! :D You know that in our house we had a ravenous Ellis, gobbling up cereal at 5 months, and now Owain who hardly looked at the spoon until 9 months. If Sanne doesn't want to eat or isn't ready, she'll let you know. I have a book I'll send you (let me know if you already have it): Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense. Great, simple advice. Love and good luck!
Bex is right - this can be a divisive topic! IMHO, Breastmilk should be plenty for a healthy, growing babe until at least 6 months - I've never heard of rice cereal helping any baby neurologically, but that's just been in my research. Bex is also right that Sanne will let you know - I've heard she should be able to sit on her own and will need to have lost her gag reflex so she can swallow. An active interest in your food is also a good sign. Babies are great in that just like sleep, you can't force it! They have to be ready!
She's a beauty!
Bear it in mind that, as B mentioned, at 10 months old Owain still prefers nursing to solids and would prolly be happy to nurse until he's 12. Years old. So you can see how my personal experiences would color my viewpoint...

I just had Otto watch the video of Sanne and he was very happy to see her moving around! I'm in the same boat as you- so no advice here. Otto goes on Monday for his 4 month- maybe I'll have more of a clue then.
