Grandma and Grandpa with Sanne and KlaraYesterday we celebrated my parent's retirement with a party at Christine and Mark's house. What a major change for them and a wonderful celebration. They look forward to the freedom to travel, spend time at our cabin on Stormy Lake and be with Sanne and Klara.
When I think about my decisions (or my need) to go back to work this Fall, I think about all of the sacrifices that our parents made to provide for us financially. I am grateful to know that both of my parents have loved their professions.
My mom is finishing her work as an elementary teacher on Thursday. It's incredible to think of all the children that she has taught over the years. She says that she knew she wanted to be a teacher as a child. What a gift to follow your dream. And in turn she has given to each of her students through her energy and excitement toward teaching. Even though my mom is an educator, she never pressured Christine and I with school. When I came home with a low grade on something in school she would always ask if I tried and that would be enough. To me, this showed her ability to care for her students individually, even her children.
My dad is finishing his career on June 29th. My dad has worked as a camera man and video editor for NBC for 40 years. He has been incredibly loyal to NBC and through his work has met some amazing people like Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson, Mike Ditka and even Spudz Makenzie. He toured with the Cubs, got us into amazing places like the floor of the United Nations, special White House tours, many, many baseball games, etc. Although his work may come naturally to him, he has shown a lot of artistic talent through editing and has also shown adaptability with all of the changes in technology.
The party wasn't just exctiement for their future but a celebration of all they have done for the people they have encountered through their work. Above are photos from the party.

what a wonderful heritage of learning, hard work and faithfulness your parents have passed down to you and will certainly instill in their granddaughters. i take similar pride in my dad's 27 years with the united way and never cease to be moved when we encounter people who have been impacted by the work he's done over the years.
Congrats to your parents! It's amazing to me when anyone is so dedicated to one profession their whole life...that's a true accomplishment. I wish them a lot of happiness and joy in these years of "freedom"...
And PS, I love love love Sanne's party dress! Does that come in big girl sizes? :)
What a blessing that both of your parents are able to retire at the same time...and at just the right time to enjoy their new granddaughters!
You have a very lovely family indeed.
